Caterpillars!

Painted Lady Caterpillars.

Coloring Easter Eggs.

First, Jack colored the freshly-boiled egg with crayons.
The heat of the eggs melted the crayons.

Then Jack poured vinegar onto the egg and added food coloring.

Jack was pleased with the results.

Egg Experiment Part 2

The vinegar completely dissolved the shells of both eggs.

The uncooked egg was very translucent.

Jack observed that the hard-boiled egg was more opaque.

Jack tested the uncooked egg to see if it would bounce.
It did.
For a moment.

Field Trip to the Chiquita Landfill

Yes, landfills do smell bad.

Not quite as bad as you'd think though!

Not only did we get to learn what happens to our trash, we met a falconer.  Falcons are used to scare away hundreds of seagulls.

So many seagulls!

Once the falcon took to the sky, it was too fast for my camera.
The seagulls took off.

Field trip to the Long Beach Aquarium with Grandma and Grandpa.

Jack said the aquarium was very interesting.
His favorite thing was seeing the seals.
He also liked petting the sharks.

Egg Experiment Part 1

What happens to an egg when you put it in vinegar for a week?
Our experiment involves one hard-boiled egg and one uncooked egg.
First, Jack labeled the hard-boiled egg.
Then he carefully placed each egg into it's own jar.

Then he covered each egg with vinegar.

Jack observed that the eggs were "bubbling up".    The hard-boiled egg had more bubbles.
Now we will observe the eggs for 5 days and see what happens.

Japanese Egg Mold

Peel a hard-boiled egg.
Put it into the mold.
After it cools in the fridge... open the mold and...
The egg is transformed!

So cool!

Down on the ranch.

We had a great visit with Grandma and Grandpa.  We did a hike to Fist Rock and surveyed their amazing property.  On the way we saw some old bones.  Jack got to ride a horse... and drive a Jeep... and a Mustang.

Almost there.

Bunny in the driveway!
A story before bed with Grandma.

We found some bones along the way.
